The Santa Fe has altitudes almost as high as the Carson National Forest, with Truchas Peak topping out at 13,103 feet.  The Santa Fe Forest is also home to the Valles Caldera, a dormant volcano with a 15-mile wide crater.  The Valles Caldera was part of the Baca Ranch, which was purchased by the federal government and made into the Valles Caldera Federal Preserve.
