Four Day Travel Itinerary for Mesa Verde Country
Day 1: Your Mesa Verde Country vacation begins with a visit
to the
Anasazi Heritage Center. A short hike to Escalante Pueblo
provides an
overlook of the Dolores River Valley and McPhee Lake, the next
stop on
your day's adventure. At McPhee, Colorado's second largest lake,
you can
fish, boat, hike, or just enjoy the area's beauty. Round out the
afternoon visiting the historic town of Dolores, home of the Rio
Grand
Southern Museum and the Galloping Goose. For your evening
entertainment,
why not enjoy a chuckwagon meal and western show, or a
stagecoach ride and
cookout?
Day 2: Mesa Verde National Park offers a glimpse into the
prehistory of
Southwest Colorado with tours of cliff dwellings and surface
sites in an
incredibly picturesque setting. Spend the day touring several of
the
magnificent sites at Mesa Verde, voted #1 historic monument in
the world
by the 1998 Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards. For the
evening
visit the Cortez Cultural Center for authentic Indian dances and
cultural
programs.
Day 3: Take a full day tour of the Ute Mountain Tribal Park.
Visit rock
art and archaeological sites in spectacular, rugged backcountry
on the
"other side of the mesa." On your return to Cortez,
stop at the Ute
Mountain Casino for dinner and a chance to try your luck at
slots, poker,
or blackjack.
Day 4: If more archaeology is your interest visit Hovenweep
National
Monument, for spectacular remote tower sites, or Crow Canyon
Archaeological Center for a day program. If you prefer a
recreational
activity, hike or bike our beautiful canyons, fish or raft our
spectacular
lakes and rivers, or experience the old west with a horseback
ride. Be
sure to allow time to shop in our exceptional trading posts and
specialty
stores. For your final evening in Mesa Verde Country, relax and
enjoy
dinner at one of our many fine restaurants.
