Chaco Culture National Historic Park

E-mail Print PDF

Chaco Canyon was one of the most important sites in the ancient Native American Puebloan culture. It is not comprised of cliff dwellings, which are found at most Puebloan sites. Instead, a broad, shallow canyon cradles the ruins of large structures with sophisticated architecture, comprising the hub of an ancient urban center. This was a Puebloan capital for art, religion, trade and administration.

Location
Chaco Canyon is located in northwestern New Mexico. The best access route is from the north, via US 550 (formerly NM 44) and County Road (CR) 7900, and CR 7950.

(Some maps and GPS devices recommend more direct routes, but they are not suitable for passenger cars.)
