The Black Canyon of the Gunnison national park showcases rugged scenery formed when the Gunnison River slowly sliced through hard, dark crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by this gorge.
The park offers rim drives and hiking trails with incredible views. Trails along the rim are easy and suitable for anyone. Trails to the bottom are strenuous and recommended only for the experienced hiker.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located in Colorado, approximately 250 miles southwest of Denver. The South Rim is 15 miles east of Montrose, via U.S. Highway 50 and CO Highway 347
The North Rim is 11 miles south of Crawford, via CO Highway 92 and North Rim Road (unpaved).
There is no direct route between the north and south rims of the canyon. Allow two to three hours to drive from one side to the other.
